Openwave and Sonim Offer Leading Push-to-Talk Client For Handset Manufacturers
Barcelona, Spain -- February 14, 2006
Strategic OEM Agreement Allows Openwave to Deliver Sonim's Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Compliant Push-to-Talk Over Cellular (PoC) Client
Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading independent provider of open software products and services for the communications and media industry, today announced a strategic reseller agreement with Sonim Technologies, the leader in enabling today's mobile data networks to deliver high-performance VoIP services, that allows Openwave to begin distributing Sonim's Xperience PoC Client ("XPC") to its wide range of leading handset manufacturer customers.
"With the OMA Push-to-Talk ("PoC") standard now complete, demand for PoC products from wireless operators and handset vendors is growing quickly, particularly across Europe and Asia," said Olivier Bartholot, head of the client business unit at Openwave. "Our agreement with Sonim gives us the opportunity to complement our leading messaging and client offerings and to provide our customers with a best-in-class OMA PoC solution."
"Sonim XPC delivers a high-quality wireless VoIP experience that has been extensively tested and continually optimized over the course of 35+ live network trials over the last 18 months. We have updated the product to be fully compliant with the newly completed OMA PoC standard and have completed over nine months of rigorous interoperability testing with every significant vendor of OMA PoC solutions," says Bob Plaschke, CEO of Sonim. "Given Openwave's strong track record in the wireless space, Sonim will benefit from their years of experience servicing the handset manufacturer community and will enable our leading PoC client to gain much greater distribution."
The Sonim XPC client will be offered in addition to the Openwave PoC Embedded Client that is currently in mobile handsets around the world.
About Sonim Xperience™ PoC Client
Sonim XPC is designed and verified to interoperate with any OMA compliant PoC server and client. XPC uses well defined standard based protocols for connection to network elements: SIP with SigComp for connecting to IMS/SIP Registrar, RTP/RTCP for media transport to the PoC server, SIP Simple for presence/availability updates, and XCAP for group and list management. The client's layered architecture and open access to service enablers (including the OMA-defined enablers: Presence and Shared XDMS) allows for easy implementation and inter-working with a series of new services and applications.
